In Buddhism, Mara is a celestial being and a psychological symbol who personifies unwholesome impulses, temptation, and the forces that hinder spiritual awakening.

Who is Mara?

The Tempter: Often described as the Buddhist equivalent of the Devil or an evil deity, Mara tried to prevent Siddhartha Gautama (the historical Buddha) from achieving enlightenment under the Bodhi tree.

Literal Meaning: The word Mara comes from a Sanskrit root meaning “death” or “causing destruction”. He destroys peace, joy, and the progress of spiritual practice.
